BOYKE ADITYA

Boyke Aditya K.S was born in Pontianak, West Kalimantan (Indonesia) in 1958. He graduated from STSRI "ASRI" and ISI Yogyakarta in 1986. Boyke’s works in very much influenced by Surrealism movement, and he is known as one of Indonesian top surrealist painter, with emphasis in biomorphic forms in which he derived meaning and substance from traditional idioms.

Boyke’s artwork aesthetic is similar to the style of old Javanese paintings and even batik (Indonesian traditional fabric pattern). Boyke’s artwork is definitely multi-faceted, both apparent in the techniques he employed and the subtle meaning behind his artwork. Boyke, who himself lives in a predominantly Javanese/ Sundanese society found himself inspired to reflect the various mythical belief/ supernatural beliefs that is inherent in Indonesian society.

Through Boyke’s surrealist, almost abstractionist, collage-like painting composition, Boyke created a unique juxtaposition of Indonesian exotic natural landscapes and some facets of traditional Javanese supernatural beliefs and mythologies.

Often, Boyke will infuse his traditional Javanese objects with a contemporary twist, which is apparent though the use of expressive lines and vibrant color palette. Many of the layer innate in his surrealist/ fantasy-like atmosphere often resides between the blurred lines of boundaries; as to reflect the limitation of human understanding of various transcendental forces.

Thus, a lot of Boyke works often reveal the communication process that still took place even in this modern life era; of stages of mythical culture (of an imaginary world derived from supernatural belief or one’s spiritual life) and the issue of transcendence of such unseen world which still dominates many Indonesian cultural practices.
