"All Saints"Anglican Church

The oldest surviving English-language institution in Jakarta is the English church now called ” All Saint’s Anglican Church” was located in Prapatan. This church has occupied the same site since 1822.

The origins of the English church can be traced back to the desire of the London Missionary Society (LMS) in the early 19th century to spread the word of Christianity in China. However, with China being closed to foreigners, the decision was made to minister to Chinese living outside China in the hope that if they ever returned “home”, they would take Christianity with them.

The second half of the 19th century was generally a very difficult period for the English church. Church finances also deteriorated alarmingly and the morgage .It was only in1910 that the church’s affairs were finally put on a firm fiiting. At the suggestion of the bishop of singapore, the church was formally brought under the Anglican Diocese of Singapore.

This Painting shows the English church as it had developed by the 1870s from original building of 1829.
