Museum Of The Batavian Society
One of the earliest and most famous societies of higher learning anywhere in Asia was the Batavian society of arts and sciences which was founded in Batavia on 24 april 1778 and was dedicated to scientific and other intellectual pursuits.
One of the founders , JCM Radermacher, donated a house belonging to Jalan Kalibesar. Besides that he also donated a number of collections of cultural objects and books that are very useful, Radermacher donations is what became the forerunner of the establishment of museums and libraries.
in the earliest they to collect animal, plant and mineral specimens for the society. The first five years were a period of great activity. The society published its own journal and articles included works on Javanese history, cultivation of agricultural products in Java, plant and animal life, tropical diseases, anthropology, geography, housing and the sewage system in Batavia.
This museum is well known among the people of Indonesia, especially residents of Jakarta. They call it "Elephant Building" or "Elephant Museum" and still exist today.
