Outside Nieuwpoort Street
This painting looks north along Buiten Nieuwpoort Straat ( Jalan Pintu Besar Selatan). It was taken from the southern end of the street near the point at which it joins with Molenvliet ( Jalan Gajah Mada and Jalan Hayam Wuruk) at the junction with Pancoran. During most of the 17th century the VOC deliberately kept this area south of the walled city thinly populated and preferred not to have trees planted there for defence reasons. The few houses in existance were made of timber or bamboo. Stone houses were not permitted. The VOC still feared attacks from remnants of forces loyal to the Kingdom of Mataram in Central Java or from the Sultanate of Bantam ( now Banten) in the west.
