Pasar Senen Market

The market at Pasar Senen was established by Justinus Vinck in 1735,in the same years  Vinck also opened another market at Tanah Abang. It gave him the distinction of being the founder of the two most important markets in the history of Jakarta’s. Both the Pasar Senen and Tanah Abang markets have been centres  of trade for more 250 years.

Permission to open Pasar Senen was granted to Vinck on 30 august 1735, with the  stipulation that the market was to open only on Mondays, hence the name Pasar Senen (“Monday Market”) but it was sometimes also known as Vinkepasser (“Vinck Market”).

In  the 18th century, the Pasar Senen market was relatively simple affair and almost all of the shops were made of bamboo with thatched roofs. The shopkeepers were predominantly Chinese. Competition for the Pasar Senen market emerged in 1821, when the nearby Pasar Baru (“New Market”) was established. A large part of Pasar Senen was destroyed by fire on 9 july 1826.

This painting is a picture of more advanced economic development in Jakarta, with the market as a trading center, especially the rapidly growing Pasar Senen  to this day.
