The Convent Of The Ursulin Sisters

This painting inspired from The Convents of the Ursulin Sisters, the place of Catholic education for girls in Batavia based on initiative by Monsignor P.M Vrancken. Seven sisters from the ursulin order in holland were chosen for the mission.

A large two-storeyed house to be their convent and school, Dormitory facilities were also available for boarders is located at Jalan Juanda. the school was formally opened on 1 august 1856.

The educational work of the sisters developed quickly, This was quite a burden for the six remaining sisters. Their heavy responsibilities, combined with the unfamiliar tropical surroundings and frequent epidemics of disease, placed great  pressure on their health. Five of the original seven sisters died between 1856 and 1863.
