The Culemborg Lookout

This painting tells about the tall tower that is on the right-hand side of this painting, is The Culemborg lookout. The Culemborg lookout was built in 1839, to be a watch post for ships arriving at the port and provide signals to the ships when they were sighted.

The name “ Culemborg ” was taken from the Culemborg bastion built in 1645 near where the lookout is located and which formed part of the old walled city of Batavia.

For several years prior to the founding of Batavia in 1619, the Muslim Prince Jayawikarta or Wijayakarta had a customs post on the point where the Culemborg lookout now stands. The location was chosen, because this was the northernmost point of this city of Jayakarta and strategically guarded the entrance to the Ciliwung River.

In this painting we know that the Culemborg lookout has the important role in the Batavia area.
