The Groote Boom
This painting is a picture of the Groote Boom, the office of the Groote Boom was the double storeyed white building and it was probably built in 1834.
Just as there was the Kleine Boom (“Small Customs Post”) which served as the arrival point for visiting passengers and the clearance of their luggage, there was also the Groote Boom (“Large Customs Post” ) where ship cargoes were cleared and customs duties paid.
However, this building only served the customs authorities between 1834 and 1852 because from 1 june 1852 a new customs office for large cargoes was opened. Nevertheless, the area in this painting continued to be known as the Groote Boom.
This painting let we know that was an early indicator of economic development with customs activities in the Groote Boom at the time.
