The Jin De Yuan Temple
The jin de yuan temple (also known as the “Wihara Dharma Bakti” or as “Kim Tek I”) is one of the two oldest surviving Chinese temples in Jakarta , the other being the Da Bo Gong temple in Ancol.
was built in 1650 ole Gou Xun-Guan as Guan Yin temple in honour of Guan Yin, the Buddhist female deity of mercy. In 1755, the name was changed to Jin De Yuan which means “Temple of Golden Virtue”.
This painting shows of the temple that did not change much after the restoration in 1890. Despite the restoration work, many important aspects of the original temple design were not altered. These include the two large circular windows, visible in the front of the temple, containing carved wooden interpretations of mythical creatures called qi-lin which portend very good fortune and the two bao-gu (lions) which guard the front of the temple. Another distinctive feature of this temple is the tall ornamental money burner, seen here between the two lions, which was apparently made in guangdong in 1821.
