The Stadhuis
One of the most important buildings in Batavia was the Stadhius (town hall), built between 1707 and 1710. This building still exists today , and has been used since 1974 as the Jakarta History Museum.
The Stadhuis was not only Batavia’s centre of administration , but also for many years contained the offices of the council of justice and the bench of magistrates. Law and order were dealt with from the Stadhuis including the legalizingof contracts and mortgages , the registering of marriages, the freeing of slaves , the issuing of licences, the buying and selling of ships and the punishment of capital crimes. The Stadhuis contained prisons and torture was a common means of extracting confessions.
Administration of batavia from this building continued until 1913,for several years after 1925, this building served as the office the Governor of West Java.
