The Westzidjse Pakhuizen
View in this painting taken from behind Pasar Ikan (Fish Market), we can see some of the Westzijdse Pakhuizen (“West Side Warehouse”) on the far right-hand side behind the masts of the small sailing boats which are moored on the west.
The Westzijdse Pakhuizen were built in the year 1652 by the VOC to store their valuable commodities, particulary spices. Although numerous additions and alterations were made but the front walls of these warehouses the only significant surviving remains of the wall until demolished by Daendels in 1808/09.
Since 1977, the Westzijdse Pakhuizen have been used as the Museum Bahari or Maritime Museum and we can still see it today. The Museum Bahari keeps historical evidence related to maritime.
